About Our Limited Travel Roller Hockey Program

NAYRHL offers a new level of play for roller hockey kids

Sportsplex NAYRHL players say the league is "fast" and "it's fun to play against new teams every week"

What is NAYHRL?

The North American Roller Hockey League (NAYRHL, pronounced NAY-rahl) is a limited travel roller hockey league. Teams from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware currently play in the league with interest from new teams every year.

NAYRHL is different from tournament travel teams because the league enforces geographic restrictions. Your child must play on a team from the rink closest to your home address. This rules forces teams to "grow from within" to help local kids become better players rather than just recruiting the best roller hockey players from a wider geographic area. (Please note: If you live closer to another roller hockey rink, please contact Cheri Zubak at 215-630-5857 to discuss eligibility.)

What does "limited travel" mean?

Good question! Limited travel certainly doesn't mean no travel. It just means you aren't travelling all over the country to play league games.

Most games are within an hour's drive from The Sportsplex. However, depending on the age division and level your child plays, you might drive as far as Pittsburgh (a fun trip, and the kids love the excitement of staying in a hotel), North Jersey, or Central Pennsylvania (about a two-hour drive). For trips that require you to drive further, you might play more than one game in a day, rather like a tournament.

What are the age divisions?

The age divisions are very similar to The Sportsplex age divisions:

  • 8U
  • 10U
  • 12U
  • 14U
  • 17U (1990 birthyear or later)

My child isn't a travel player. He (or she) just loves roller hockey.

You're exactly the kid of family who would benefit most from joining a NAYRHL team!

First, any kid who loves roller hockey should have the opportunity to play as many games as possible. NAYRHL offers the chance to play against new teams at a more competitive level. What could be more fun for a roller hockey kid?

Second, your child is sure to be playing on a team that practices. In fact, the Feasterville Fury pro roller hockey team assists with junior teams practices. The kids love working out with these talented older players.

Also, NAYRHL has three levels of teams (A, AA, and AAA) for each age division. Before the season begins, NAYRHL holds a "seeding tournament" in which teams play against each other to determine which level they should play during the season. This means your child can play on a team that best fits his or her level of experience with roller hockey.

What about my Sportsplex team? Does my child have to quit that team to play with the Jr. Fury?

No - in fact, the Jr. Fury don't play as a team in the Sportsplex league. We think your child will have a great time playing with and against Fury teammates on Thursday and Friday nights at The Sportsplex.

How long is the season?

Games begin in early March. Playoffs are in early June.

However, teams will begin practicing as soon as they are selected. If your team is selected in November, for example, you will begin practices (at least twice a month, possibly more for some teams) as soon as possible to ensure you are ready for the season.

Your child will also have the opportunity to play pre-season games against NAYRHL teams and perhaps participate in occasional tournaments. In fact, we will be encouraging teams to enter two large events that will be held at The Sportsplex in 2008:

How did our teams do last year?

We had only one team in NAYRHL last year, but, man, did they do great! The Jr. Fury 10U won the silver medal in the 10AAA division, and had the best record for the season of all the 10AAA teams.
